The 21st century is widely believed to be the decade of fashion, and many people agree with this assessment. Christmas party fashion trends are a reflection of how our society perceives fashion, and how our fashion trends are affected by society’s perception of fashion. A few years ago at a friend of my grandmother’s party there were a lot of discussions on the subject, and one of the questions raised was whether or not there would be a black tie dress during Christmas because most people in the US weren’t really used to seeing black tie dresses at that time. This resulted in a heated debate which resulted in a lot of laughter, but it also renewed a debate that has been festering for many years: are women really trapped in a rut with regard to fashion or are all women equal when it comes to fashion?
One of the trends that came to the forefront in the 21st century was a sort of party wear revivalism, and what can be seen at that point in time was a lot more down to the individual person than anything else. It was a time when women were reclaiming their femininity and dressing for their natures instead of what was culturally dictated. One of the Christmas party fashion trends that emerged in that era was the rise of embellished, glitzy, over-the-top gowns, and this trend didn’t take hold only during the Christmas celebrations, but continued right up until the New Year’s. During the height of this New Year’s Eve fashion, women would dress up almost like bridesmaids, except that they would look even better!
Another popular Christmas party trend was that of the short dress. At one point in time the shortest dress that you could buy was knee length, which left most women feeling a little bit flattered, if not a little embarrassed. However, today the short dress is generally worn as a sort of work skirt – meaning that it’s quite short, but holds up well with a great deal of comfort. What this meant for party goers was a greater range of variety, as it allowed women to wear their own style, and not just the Christmas party fashions that had been popular up until this point. Of course, it also helped that most women today tend to think of themselves as more outgoing, and comfortable with their bodies, so the short dresses are usually seen as a form of daring – something that makes them a little more exciting and fun than the traditional Christmas party attire. So, whether you’re looking for something that’s more subtle or a bit more boisterous, there’s certainly a style out there for you.
